What are Neuro-Otology and Neuro-Ophthalmology and how are they connected?
The Neuro-otology and neuro-ophthalmology care area involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that involve the visual pathways, affect control eye movements or affect the vestibular circuits in the cranial nerves, brain stem, cerebellum and cerebral hemispheres. These diseases can cause problems such as vision loss, balance problems or vertigo.
UHN’s neuro-otology and neuro-ophthalmology care areas
UHN provides neuro-otology and neuro-ophthalmology care through the multidisciplinary clinic operated in the Department of Otolaryngology. This clinic was established to help patients with complex vestibular (inner ear balance disorder) symptoms.
Our team includes neuro-otologists, neuro-ophthalmologists and neurologists as well as consultant-scientists from the University of Toronto. Together we provide patients with comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of neuro-otology and neuro-ophthalmology disorders for patients complaining of balance disorders.
In addition to caring for patients in clinics, we are engaged in research to better understand the anatomy and physiology of ocular motor (eye movement) and vestibular (equilibrium) control.
