Admission
The majority of the patients are admitted directly from Psychiatric Emergency Services Unit (PESU) at the Toronto Western Hospital. Occasionally, they are referred for admission through other outpatient clinics at University Health Network hospitals or through community physicians. Once admitted to the Inpatient Unit, the patient is further stabilized if still in crisis and then undergoes a detailed psychiatric assessment, review of current medications and brief intervention. Average length of stay can be 1-3 weeks. Elective admissions are arranged through the Director of the Inpatient Unit.
Treatment
Individualized assessment and treatment strategy are the first steps following admission. The mandate of the unit is to provide a safe environment in which patients receive care including an individualized set of treatment plans as well as a firm discharge date. Treatment includes psychotherapy, medications and involves the multidisciplinary team (including social workers and occupational therapists) interacting with the patient and their relevant support network.
