For some, asthma is an occasional winter cough. For others, it is a daily struggle with wheezing and chest tightness punctuated by urgent trips to the emergency department. Someone with asthma may find that it changes in severity over time, perhaps rapidly with the seasons or gradually over a lifetime. For reasons not fully understood, asthma has become more common and more severe in most developed nations.
In the 1980s, asthma specialists were dismayed to learn disability and death from asthma were on the increase. Despite having better and better medications for asthma treatment, doctors and their patients appeared to be losing the struggle to keep asthma under control.
Our Team of Professionals
The Asthma and Airway Centre is staffed by a team of healthcare professionals whose goal is to offer the best of asthma care, not only through the prescribing of medication but through a program of patient and family education that will make each patient and family effective partners in care. In addition, the Asthma and Airway Centre is a training ground for health professionals and maintains an active program of clinical and basic research. The Asthma Education Handbook was prepared as a basic reference for people with asthma. It is intended to complement the information provided by staff and not to replace the specific advice and information provided by your doctor about your asthma and its care.
