The Renal Transplant program offers training opportunities to medical students, Internal Medicine residents, Nephrology Fellows and Transplant Nephrology Fellows.
As a high volume centre performing over 120 transplants per year, trainees receive exposure to a large number of new transplant patients. Trainees will receive experience managing a variety of different types of transplants, including living donor, deceased donor and donation after cardiac death. In addition, there is an active desensitization program for patients with a positive crossmatch or ABO-incompatibility against their donor and we participate in the national Living Donor Paired Exchange Registry.
The Renal Transplant service also admits or consults on patients post-transplant who present with a wide variety of medical and surgical issues, further broadening the experience of this rotation.
Trainees participate in pre- and post-transplant clinics. Participation in pre-transplant clinics allows trainees to understand the process of pre-transplant assessment, and communication of the risks and benefits of transplantation to patients. Management of transplant patients continues in the post-transplant clinic. The Renal Transplant Program follows approximately 1600 post-transplant patients, ranging from one week to forty years post-transplant. There is extensive exposure to the HLA Laboratory and use of newer technologies in evaluating immunologic risk pre- and post-transplant.
In addition to clinical experience, the formal education program includes:
- Weekly seminars covering key topics in renal transplantation
- Weekly Multi-Organ Transplant Rounds, featuring topics and research relevant to all organ groups
- Weekly transplant journal club
- City-wide Nephrology Rounds
- Weekly biopsy rounds, which includes discussion of both native and renal transplant biopsies
Medical students and Internal Medicine residents interested in a Renal Transplant rotation should contact Dr. Jeffrey Schiff.
