The kidneys function to remove waste from the blood. There are more than 80 different kidney diseases that can cause kidneys not to function properly. When a person’s kidneys have lost 85-90% of their function, they have end-stage kidney disease, and treatments like hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are necessary.

Kidney transplantation is an alternative for many end-stage kidney patients, freeing them from diet, fluid and other restrictions often associated with dialysis treatment. Transplantation also offers the advantages of increased energy, an overall improved sense of well-being and in selected patients, improved survival. Thus, kidney transplantation is now recognized as the best type of treatment for many patients with end-stage kidney disease.
