Our Commitment to your Safety

Safe patient care is fundamental to quality health care services. At University Health Network (UHN), patient safety is an organizational priority. We are dedicated to delivering safe, patient centred care in an integrated care delivery environment.Improving patient safety is about creating an environment that is transparent and committed to quality improvement change.

This commitment is inherent in UHN’s mission and purpose statements:

How are we doing this?
Proactive identification of risk
Reporting incidents, near misses and hazards
Sharing learnings across the organization
Investigating the root cause of incidents to determine quality improvement actions, process changes and learnings
Patient Safety Leadership WalkRounds
Tracking data such as hospital acquired infections, wait time for surgery, hand washing compliance, and many others

Participating in the national Safer Healthcare Now campaign with the goal of reducing the number of injuries and deaths related to adverse events

Participating in Accreditation Canada’s Qmentum program which is an external peer review process to assess and improve the patient care services organizations provide based on standards of excellence

Providing support to our staff, patients, and their families in the form of a capable and dedicated patient relations team

Being involved and aligning our patient safety initiatives on an organizational, regional, and national level

It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to ensure that our patients receive safe, quality care.  At UHN Patient Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
